wiscosh: safety before profits
  1. Eternal Flame WisCOSH's Memorial To our Fallen Brothers and Sisters Eternal Flame

Workers' Memorial Day, April 28th, is an annual event to commemorate those workers killed on the job or who die from workplace exposures and/or illness. The Milwaukee area comemmoration is co-sponsored by WisCOSH, the WI State AFL-CIO, and the Milwaukee Area Labor Council as a reminder of the continuing strugle for safe and healthy jobs. Traditionally, the names of the deceased have been read to pay homage. However, due to a law passed in 1993, called "The Confidential Nature of BLS Records," the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the Department of Labor is not allowed to release of the names of workers who do not receive death benifits, nor do they include the names of persons that die from occupational disease. If you have the name and information of someone who died on the job or from a work related exposure or illness please contact WisCOSH with the information.

If you have lost a loved one to occupational illness, workplace exposure or a death in the workplace and are looking for some help figuring out what to do and who to contact the United Support and Memorial for Workplace Fatalities may be of help. This web site is run by a woman, and her family, who lost her brother to a workplace fatality. They provide support, awareness, tributes, memorials, article, self-help, workers comp. laws, wrongful death attorneys and safety resources. And most of all they care! They listen!

At a workers' memorial that commemorates the dead there should be no 'John Does'!! Join WisCOSH in working for that day when we loose no more loved ones to unsafe workplaces, and everyone who goes to work comes back home again.

  6. 1996

WisCOSH has identified the following on-the-job deaths in Wisconsin during 1996. Many deaths go unreported, particularly those due to occupational illnesses. The following workers were identified with the help of various sources, including the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Worker's Compensation Division of the State of Wisconsin.

If you have lost a loved one to occupational illness or a death in the workplace and are looking for some help figuring out what to do and who to contact the United Support and Memorial for Workplace Fatalities may be of help. This web site is run by a woman, and her family, who lost her brother to a workplace fatality. They provide support, awareness, tributes, memorials, article, self-help, workers comp. laws, wrongful death attorneys and safety resources. And most of all they care! They listen!

  10. 2000

On April 28, the unions of the AFL-CIO observe Workers Memorial Day to remember those who have suffered and died on the job, and to renew the fight for safe workplaces.

Thirty years ago the U.S. Congress passed the Occupational Safety and Health Act, promising every worker the right to a safe job. Unions and our allies have fought hard to make that promise a reality, winning protections that have saved hundreds of thousands of lives and prevented millions of workplace injuries.

But now these hard-won gains are under attack by industry groups who overturned the OSHA Ergonomics Standard and who now want to further weaken OSHA and make complience with the law voluntary. On this Workers Memorial Day, we call upon Americans to oppose any effort to roll back workplace protections, and to defend the promise of safe jobs for all workers.

Last year, 114 workers died on the job in Wisconsin. Yet we were only able to obtain 56 names from the lists provided by OSHA and the Wisconsin Workers Compensation office. Because of a law passed in 1993, the government will not release the names of those who died unless a death benifit is paid.

If you, or someone you know, have lost a loved one to occupational illness or a death in the workplace and are looking for some help figuring out what to do and who to contact the United Support and Memorial for Workplace Fatalities may be of help. This web site and the caring people who run it can provide support, awareness, tributes, memorials, article, self-help, workers comp. laws, wrongful death attorneys and safety resources. And most of all they care! They listen!

  11. 2001

On April 28, the unions of the AFL-CIO observe Workers Memorial Day to remember those who have suffered and died on the job, and to rededicate ourselves to the fight for safe workplaces.

This Workers Memorial Day has special significance. The Sept 11 attacks claimed the lives of more than 3000 people, more than 600 of them union members. Most of those who died were workers - those who were on their jobs when the attacks occured, and the heroic firefighters and rescuers who worked to save their lives. Several weeks later, workers again were victims as deadly anthrax was sent through the mail, infecting postal workers and others.

These terrorist attacks have raised new health and safety issues, but long-recognized hazards are just as deadly. Each year, more than 6000 people are killed on the job, 50,000 die from occupational disease, and millions more are injuried. Just days after 9/11, the worst mine disaster in a decade killed 13 miners. Ergonomics hazards injure and cripple 1.8 million workers each year, and remain the nation's biggest safety problem.

We honor those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, and all the workers who died on the job in 2001, including 107 in Wisconsin. Only 58 names are available from the Wisconsin Worker's Compensation office.

On April 28, the unions of the AFL-CIO observe Workers Memorial Day to remember those who have suffered and died on the job. As we remember workers who have died in workplace accidents, suffered diseases due to exposure to toxic substances, or been injured because of dangerous conditions, we rededicate ourselves to the fight for safe workplaces. Each year, nearly 6,000 workers are killed at work, 50,000 die from occupational diseases, and millions more are injured.

According to the Wisconsin Worker's Compensation office, 54 workers died last year from workplace accidents and occupational illnesses. Six suffered a job-related lung disease, including four who died from asbestos exposure. This list is not a incomplete, since not all deaths result in the payment of death benifits.

On April 28, we honor these fallen workers. And we will keep on fighting until the promise of safe jobs is a reality.

If you, or someone you know, have lost a loved one to occupational illness or a death in the workplace and are looking for some help figuring out what to do and who to contact the United Support and Memorial for Workplace Fatalities may be of help.

On April 28, the unions of the AFL-CIO observe Workers Memorial Day to remember those who have died on the job. As we remember those who have been killed in workplace incidents, died from diseases due to exposure to toxic substances or injured from working in dangerous conditions or without proper training, we rededicate ourselves to renew the fight for safe workplaces. Each year, nearly 6,000 workers are killed at work, 50,000 die from occupational diseases, and million more are injured.

The Bush administration has turned it's back on workplace safety by blocking or overturning dozens of workplace protections on ergonomics, tuberculosis, indoor air quality and cancer-causing substances. We will fight for the right to form unions and speak out on job safety, and we will keep on fighting until all workers have the right to a safe and healthy workplace.

According to the Wisconsin Workers Compensation office, 54 workers died in 2003 from workplace accidents and occupational illnesses. This list is incomplete due to the fact that not all deaths in the workplace are able to be reported due to a law that only allows the release of information where a death benifit is paid by Workers Compensation.

As of April 22, 2005, the Iraq War has claimed the lives of 1569 US soldiers, including 1218 in combat. The 351 non-combat deaths include everything from vehicle and firearm accidents to drownings and suicides. According to the US Department of Defence, 11,888 have been wounded in action. But that number may actually be as high a 20,000 when you include those treated for injuries, illnesses, and psychological trauma. The Iraq War has the potential to claim many more US and Iraqi casualties, both military and civilian. Thirty-five Wisconsin soldiers have died in Iraq. Thier names, hometowns, and cause of death are listed below with the other Wisconsin workers.

If you, or someone you know, have lost a loved one to occupational illness or a death in the workplace and are looking for some help figuring out what to do and who to contact the United Support and Memorial for Workplace Fatalities may be of help. Every day in the United States, 15 workers die from occupational injuries. Before this year is over, thousands of workers will be killed on the job and millions will be injured or stricken with occupational illness. Most of these deaths will occur one at a time and go largely unnoticed except by family, friends and coworkers. Each of these deaths is an unnecessary tragedy.

According to the Wisconsin Workers' Compenation Division, there were 85 workplace fatalities last year, but we have the names of only 52. Listed below are the names of Wisconsin workers, that WisCOSH was able to obtain, who lost their lives in 2005 to worklace injury or occupational disease. This report is dedicated to all of those who have lost their lives due to workplace injuries or disease.

As of August 28, 2006, the Iraq War has claimed the lives of 2634 U.S. soldiers, including 2137 in combat. The 497 non-combat deaths include everything from vehichle and firearms accidents to drownings and suicides. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, 19,890 soldiers have been wounded in action. But that number may actuallt be as high as 48,000 when you include those treated for injuries, illnesses and psychological trauma.

The war in Iraq has the potential to claim many more U.S. and Iraqi casualties, both military ans civilian. Fifty-nine Wisconsin troops have been killed in Iraq. At Workers Memorial Day 2005 WisCOSH began recognizing these men and women who are are mothers and fathers, brothers and sister, sons and daughters of ours who are doing a difficult job without many of the workplace rights and protections that cover workers in traditional workplaces. Twenty-seven have died since the start of 2005. Their names and branch of service are listed below as well.

If you have lost a loved one to occupational illness or a death in the workplace and are looking for some help figuring out what to do, where to start, who to contact then the United Support and Memorial for Workplace Fatalities may be of help. This web site is run by a woman, and her family, who lost her brother to a workplace fatality. They provide support, awareness, tributes, memorials, article, self-help, workers comp. laws, wrongful death attorneys and safety resources. And most of all they care! They listen!
